What is a Photofacial?

Photofacial is a generic term for a skin treatment that uses some kind of light-based technology. Photofacials have a number of different uses, but are mostly used for treating brown spots, broken capillaries, and boosting collagen. There are two types of photofacials – Limelight and Genesis. They are completely different, so it’s extremely important to understand which photo facial technology is being used. That way you are more likely to get the results you hope to achieve. Lotus Skin Care Center & Medi Spa offers both types.

The LimeLight Facial is a new, non-invasive approach to treating hyperpigmentation, sundamage and age spots. The procedure offers the advantage of improving skin tone and surface imperfections associated with aging and photodamage. The LimeLight Facial is ideal for any part of your face, neck and décolleté with skin redness, telangiectasia (tiny veins) or brown spots. Light (low contrast) brown spots, which were previously difficult to resolve, respond very well to treatment. The treatment is not painful, however when the pulse of light is delivered, you will experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation. Some clients have described “a jolting sensation” that lasts a fraction of a second. Gel is used to cool the skin before vascular treatments. One to three treatments are usually sufficient to see results. Additional treatments may be recommended, especially for excessively sun damaged skin. Immediately following treatment, clients are slightly red and report a sunburn-like feeling lasting typically a few hours. Make-up can be applied to cover the redness. During the first week, you can expect the brown spots to temporarily darken. The darkened spots will then flake off and fade. Clients often ask if the spots and redness reappear over time – The answer is no, however it should be noted that new brown spots, telangiectasia and diffused redness may appear with new sun damage; nevertheless they too can be treated. Remember to always apply broad-spectrum sunscreen when outdoors to minimize sun damage and the appearance of new spots and diffuse redness. Rosacea is chronic and cannot be “cured” with any laser or light source, however its appearance can be improved.

Laser Genesis skin therapy is an ideal treatment for those suffering with rosacea, redness, enlarged pores, or acne scars. Laser Genesis heats the upper dermis well below the surface of your skin, generating heat in the areas of your skin affected by rosacea or facial redness. The blood vessels causing the redness collapse and are reabsorbed by the body. The heat from the laser wavelengths can also kill demodex mites which have been linked to Rosacea. Results tend to be subtle yet consistent after each treatment. Four or five treatments are usually enough to give you clearer, more youthful skin. After a Laser Genesis treatment, there are no embarrassing or painful side effects, such as skin irritation or bruising. Treatments are so gentle, they can be performed without topical gels or anesthetics. The Laser Genesis procedure has also been scientifically proven to diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by producing new collagen. By gently heating the upper dermis well below your skin’s surface, Laser Genesis stimulates collagen re-growth to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Additional heat is generated in dilated capillaries to reduce redness.
